New commissioning of a hybrid solar-station to power an irrigation system using the SD700SP
The company, Agricultura Solar, which is located in the area of Zamora (Spain) needed the irrigation system to cover an extension of 33 hectares dedicated to cultivation
This facility aims to serve as a pilot plant that will be able to extend the solar powered system to the rest of the felds in the area.
Once again, the proven versatility of the SD700 demonstrates its potential for all types of pumping applications, in this case in its SD700SP version for solar pumping.
The unstoppable evolution of renewable energy, coupled with the rise in fuel prices, is motivating many users to replace the energy supply by using diﬀerent processes. The isolated pumping solution becomes the ideal type of application for the integration of photovoltaic energy, and that is because usually, there is enough space for the installation of the solar station and the panels.
In this case, the existing plant consists of a pumping system which was responsible for irrigating several cultivation felds. It was done by means of a 60 kW pump that feeds exclusively on the electricity grid from a diesel generator. The subsequent diesel consumption was more than 40,000 litres per season, which had a signifcant impact on production costs.
Facing up to this situation, the customer decided to install a photovoltaic feld in order to minimize the cost of fuel without losing the services currently available.The challenge for Power Electronics was to make the facility run at full capacity throughout the day, minimizing the expense on fuel.
The difculty lay in the type of installation. Since it is a hydraulic network, the amount of water pumped is not a priority. The main objective here is to keep the pipe at a constant pressure. This discards the approach of a pure solar system due to its intermittent functional nature (changes in solar radiation would prevent a constant working regime). It requires a hybrid solution where the diesel generator acts only as support in the moments of Low solar radiation.
The solution, developed by Power Electronics is a hybrid system that has an alternating current and a direct current input. The design of the system prioritizes the injection of energy from the Photovoltaic feld. In case of a possible reduction of the solar energy, the SD700SP manages the operation of the diesel generator assuring that the ressure of the system stays within the programmed levels. Once the power from the Photovoltaic feld is restored, it returns it to the initial rest state.
All this is possible thanks to the versatility of the SD700SP and its exclusive Dynamic Maximum Power Point Tracker (Mppt) algorithm. This algorithm allows you to predict the behavior of the Photovoltaic plates, set the optimum working point and know the available power at any time. With this information, the SD700SP is able to decide if it really is necessary to start the diesel generator, or if you can adjust the system regulation to withstand the drop in solar power without decreasing the pressure in the hydraulic network.
Additionally, the SD700SP has a wide range of functions for pumping systems (auxiliary pumps starting, hydraulic protections, start and stop transitions, etc.). All of them inherited from the SD700, which allows it to adapt to any type of installation, under the most demanding conditions.
After 6 months of operation, the customer is extremely satisfed with the results. His fuel consumption has been reduced by 90%. This allows him to have a lower return period than initially expected. Due to these circumstances, this kind of set-up will be installed in other irrigation systems.
